Self-Care, Work-Life Balance, and Pursuing Success: Does Self Care Mean Pausing Success?

The pursuit of success often seems synonymous with burnout and sacrificing personal well-being.

However, what if I told you that self care, work-life balance, and success are not mutually exclusive? And no, I'm not going to tell you that "if you love what you do, you'll never work a day in your life"

It's time to shift the narrative about what self care looks like in real life and understand that success in business and in work can be achieved without compromising your health and happiness. Self care goes far beyond just the luxurious indulgence we often see online and the surface level stuff you see online is keeping you from reaping the full benefits of a fully integrated self care practice. Meaning, deep, self care is about finding functional and sustainable practices that cater to your individuality, so that it's possible to navigate life's complexities and pursue success without losing yourself along the way. Self care should work, regardless of how chaotic your life is.

If you've ever lost your sense of self during a period of business at work, and feel like there's no way to have both a fulfilling personal life and a successful work life, let me tell you that is not true. You can have both.

Navigating the Balance:

In your journey to success, there are times when you do have to let go of some of your personal time for travel, a busy season, or an especially chaotic time at work. Yet, these aren't the times when self care has to go to the way side. In fact, it is during these very moments that self care becomes even more crucial. Instead of pushing self care aside, it's important to acknowledge its significance in maintaining your overall well-being and resilience. Find ways to take the busy schedule ahead of you and infuse self care into your busy schedule. Release the idea that self care has to always be an extra, added into the evenings, and embrace easy, low-maintenance self care instead.

Customizing Your Self-Care:

Self care is not a one-size-fits-all concept and what we see portrayed as self care online is rarely something that would work for nearly anyone. Each of us possesses unique cultural backgrounds, abilities and disabilities, personalities, and preferences that shape your individual experiences and needs for a fulfilling life. It's about customizing your self care practice to cater to your distinctive needs, schedule, and preferences as a person. Start by spending some time trying to understand what it is that you need from your self care, instead of just trying to add in more of what you've been told is "good self care". When you better understand what it is that you need, you will better be able to curate a self care practice that is functional for you in times of chaos, at work and at home and that will continue serving you throughout your entire career.

When pursuing a demanding career, it's important to have a self care practice that flows seamlessly into your life so that you are covered in times of peace or chaos. However, determining what that self care practice should look like can feel overwhelming and nearly impossible.

As a passionate self-care advocate and educator, I offer customized self-care workshops for workplaces, equipping employees with the essential skills to embrace self-care, find work-life balance, and attain genuine happiness amidst their pursuit of success. By investing in employee well-being, organizations foster an environment of productivity, reduced turnover, and a more positive work culture.

In the pursuit of success, don't forget the importance that self care can play in filling out the bigger picture of your life. By recognizing that self care is not a luxury, but a functional practice tailored to your unique needs, you can achieve harmony in both your pursuit of growth and forward momentum within your career and in your personal life.
